FAQ
Basic Information on Fentanyl
What is fentanyl?
It is a synthetic opioid to treat severe pain, but it can also be found illegally on the market.
How does fentanyl compare to other opioids?
Fentanyl is up to 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine.
Why is fentanyl considered an epidemic?
Because of the high rate of overdoses and deaths in medical and illegal settings, whether from voluntary or involuntary consumption
Fentanyl Use and Exposure
Can fentanyl be present in other drugs?
Yes, fentanyl is cheap so it is frequently mixed with drugs such as heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, Ecstasy, MDMA, Xanax, among others, without the users’ knowledge, increasing the risks of overdose.
How can you know if there is fentanyl in the drugs?
It is not possible to tell if fentanyl is present in drugs by smell or taste.
Fentanyl test strips can help tell if fentanyl is present in a drug sample. They work in 1-2 minutes. Although they cannot indicate the amount present.
What is the lethal dose of fentanyl?
The amount needed for a lethal overdose of fentanyl is minimal: 2 mg or 10-15 grains of salt.
How does fentanyl affect the body?
It causes deep sedation, slowed breathing, confusion and, in high doses, death. It also causes addiction.
Emergency Procedures
What is Naloxone and how does it work?
Naloxone, the active ingredient in NARCAN® Nasal Spray, is an emergency medication that reverses opioid overdose. One of the formats in which it can be found is the nasal spray.
What are the symptoms of a fentanyl overdose?
- Decreased alertness or unresponsiveness.
- Cool, clammy skin
- Bluish skin or lips
- Small pupils
- Slow or no breathing
Where can I get NARCAN® Nasal Spray?
This medication is available over-the-counter and can be obtained at any pharmacy in the USA.
- How is NARCAN® Nasal Spray administered?
- Insert in any nostril,
- Tilt the person’s head backwards and press the applicator.
- Press the nose and provide mouth-to-mouth breathing every 5 seconds for 2-3 minutes.
- At this point you are waiting for the naloxone to take effect.
IMPORTANT: You will not be able to do this to yourself. An overdose of opioids will render you unconscious.
What are the first actions to take in case of an overdose?
Call 911, check for breathing and pulse, administer NARCAN® Nasal Spray following the step-by-step procedure explained in “How is NARCAN® Nasal Spray administered?”.
Can Naloxone fail?
Naloxone may not work if it is given too late. It also may not work if an opioid did not cause the overdose. Some more potent opioids, such as fentanyl, may need more than one dose of naloxone to reverse their effect.

How does fentanyl reach the recreational drug market?
Fentanyl is introduced into the recreational drug market by being mixed with other substances such as heroin or cocaine (among others), or pressed into pills that mimic legal drugs.
How can I identify and report the illegal sale of fentanyl?
